Wellington girls eliminate Mulvane to play for sub-state championship

first_imgMulvane7066—19 Wellington: P. Adams 9, T. French 6, Snipes 18, S. French 4, Hughes 2, Zimmerman 4, Wright 2, Moore 2. by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — After the Wellington girls dismantled Mulvane 47-19 Friday evening, Crusader basketball coach Eric Adams went into the locker room and put up his No. 1 finger.“I didn’t say anything,” Adams said. “They knew it meant one more game.”Wellington will have that game Saturday night, when it will attempt to get back to a state tournament for the second time in four years. The Lady Dukes will play the winner of the Winfield-Rose Hill game Saturday at 6 p.m.The Crusaders dominated this first round game – for pretty much all 32 minutes.Going into the contest there was reason to be nervous for Crusader fans. Wellington had struggled with Mulvane the last time these two teams played, winning by a mere six points, 47-41.Mulvane also had that post-season streak against Wellington – eliminating the Lady Dukes last year in the sub-state championship, as well as girls softball and volleyball. But there was none of that in Winfield Friday despite Wellington not playing well offensively in the first half.“We knew going in that in order to win this game we had to beat them on the boards and with our defense,” Adams said. “I didn’t think we played particularly well offensively and was missing some easy shots, but we were winning the battle on the floor.”Wellington would open up a 13-7 lead and then blanked it in the second quarter to take a 24-7 lead into intermission. The game could have been worse had it not been missing a healthy number of in-out shots – you know the kind where the ball is in the basket and mysteriously gets popped back out by some mystic force. The Lady Dukes would continue its momentum in the third and led 36-13 after three quarters. The fourth saw plenty of playing time by everyone. In the end, Wellington was not bad from the field going 20-of-45. It was only 3-of-9 from the free throw. As always Lauryn Snipes was the money with 18 points and the only girl to reach double figures. Peyton Adams had 9 with three treys.Mulvane, which didn’t make much of anything, was led by Emma Chambers with 9. Girls 1st round sub-state Close Forgot password?
