LAS VEGAS, Nev. – MGM Resorts International drew criticism Tuesday for saying hundreds of survivors of the Las Vegas mass shooting, who are being sued by the casino operator, could opt to have the money that will be used to serve them a lawsuit instead donated to a charity. The company in July sued more than 1,900 victims of the Oct. 1 mass shooting at one of its properties and has been working to notify them as it faces a standard 90-day deadline.MGM told the victims’ attorneys it would rather make the donations to charities than spend the money to pay people to serve the legal notices.“The money spent on personal service of process — up to $250 per person — could be better directed to do some affirmative good,” MGM’s attorneys wrote in the letter shared with The Associated Press.MGM offered to make a $500 charitable donation for each person who waives being served or authorizes an attorney to accept service on their behalf, but a victims’ lawyer quickly called it all “nonsense.”Attorney Robert Eglet, part of a group representing most of the victims, said the company is just trying to “spin” its attempt to save money on serving legal notices.“It will cost the MGM significantly more than $250 to serve them,” Eglet said. “This is just more outrageous conduct by them.”Serving defendants is a crucial step in a civil lawsuit. It informs a defendant that a lawsuit has been filed against him or her, provides the individual a copy of the complaint and starts running a 21-day deadline for the person to respond to the lawsuit.Eglet said the firms representing most of the victims have not been authorized to accept the legal notices. That would force MGM to find and serve each of the 1,977 people it sued.Letters explaining the offer of charitable donations were sent Tuesday to 37 attorneys representing victims. As part of MGM’s offer, each defendant would choose a charity that supports survivors or families of slain victims, and the donation would be made in his or her name.If the offers are not accepted, “we will personally serve the complaints courteously and respectfully,” MGM spokeswoman Debra DeShong said. The casino operator filed the lawsuits in an attempt to have a federal judge declare that it has no liability to survivors or families of slain victims under a federal law enacted after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The law limits liability when a company or group uses services approved by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. MGM argues it is free of liability because the security vendor for the outdoor venue was federally certified at the time of the attack.Twenty-two thousand people were at an MGM-owned outdoor venue for a country music festival, when a high-stakes gambler broke the windows of his 32nd-floor casino-resort suite and began shooting. The gunman killed 58 people and injured more than 800 before taking his own life.MGM has insisted its lawsuits, which don’t demand money, are meant to avoid years of costly litigation.___Follow Regina Garcia Cano on Twitter at https://twitter.com/reginagarciakNO

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – With the amounts of rain experienced for most of the summer in Fort St. John and surrounding areas, it looks like farmers are now getting a break in the weather.Kelly Kassian, manager of Viterra in Fort St. John, the crops and fields were affected by the steady rain but are now ready for harvest, starting on canola by the end of this week.“They didn’t mature as fast as we wanted them to because of all the rain and everything but they’re coming along now. We should have some canola start getting swathed down by the end of this week.” As for the peas, Kassian says they will be a bit delayed as they need more sun and time to dry up and mature before they are ready to harvest.According to Kassian, some of the fields were hit hard by the unfavourable weather as some had wet spots and even crops knocked down.Environment Canada is calling for mostly warmer temperatures and sun this week, with a chance of showers on the weekend.
Celebrated author Arundhati Roy’s new book ‘Ek Tha Doctor Ek Tha Sant’ was launched on April 5, at the Constitution Club, by a noted panel of writers, journalists and activists including Urmilesh Urmi, Dilip Mandal, Rajendra Pal Gautam, Anita Bharti, Manisha Bangar, Sunil Sardar and Anil Yadav. This book is a translation of The Doctor and the Saint: Caste, Race, and Annihilation of Caste – The Debate Between B R Ambedkar and M K Gandhi, written by Arundhati Roy. The Hindi book was translated by Ratan Lal and Anil Yadav ‘Jai Hind’. Also Read – An income drop can harm brainTalking about the book, Roy insists readers must examine both the political development and influence of M K Gandhi, and also why B R Ambedkar’s brilliant challenge to his near-divine status was suppressed by India’s elite. In Roy’s analysis, we see that Ambedkar’s fight for justice was systematically sidelined in favor of policies that reinforced caste, resulting in the current nation of India: independent of British rule, globally powerful, and marked to this day by the caste system. Also Read – Shallu Jindal honoured with Mahatma AwardBoth Ambedkar and Gandhi were their generation’s emissaries of a profound social, political and philosophical conflict that had begun long ago and has still by no means ended. The debate between Ambedkar and Gandhi is not new but the book gave a perspective to the difference. The panel discussed Ambedkar’s arguments in their vital historical context— namely, as an extended public political debate with Mohandas Gandhi. They also discussed some uncomfortable, controversial, and even surprising truths about the political thought and career of India’s most famous and most revered figure.

Former OSU cornerback Gareon Conley speaks with the media on March 5 at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. Credit: Ashley Nelson | Sports DirectorINDIANAPOLIS — If you ask Gareon Conley, he could be the 2017 NFL Draft’s top cornerback. Although the hype around OSU’s secondary has been centered around Marshon Lattimore and Malik Hooker, Conley’s combine numbers just might show why teams should not forget how good he is.Conley came into the 2016-17 season as the top cornerback for Ohio State after Eli Apple left the Buckeyes and was selected in the first round by the New York Giants. While Conley might have been listed as the No. 1 corner, his teammate Marshon Lattimore stole the show, and is now considered to be the best cornerback in this draft. While Conley is pleased with seeing his teammates receive recognition for his ability, he could easily be considered as the top player at the position himself. He said he feels the wide range of skills he brings — from press-man coverage to playing nickel — separate him from the group.“I feel like all the corners here obviously have talent, or we wouldn’t be here,” Conley said. “So I set myself apart mentally, with my mental toughness and being able to handle adversity on the field and snapping clear. I feel like that sets me apart.”Conley’s athleticism has put him on numerous team’s radars, but hasn’t quite put him ahead of his teammates. Sometimes the secondary player’s fans forget from OSU in 2016-17, Conley still feels he is right up there with both Lattimore and Hooker.“I don’t feel forgotten about,” Conley said. “I embrace everything that I get, and I take advantage of everything that I’ve been given. And I congratulate them for everything they’re getting too.”Finishing his college career with 91 total tackles, 15 passes defended and six interceptions, Conley has the stats to show he can be productive. However, the biggest questions moving ahead are whether Conley can play tight with NFL-level receivers.Even with that question mark, Conley possesses the kind of speed that can close gaps quickly.“I plan on running a 4.4,” he said. “I’m trying to get a 4.3.”Former Buckeyes Curtis Samuel busted off a 4.31 40-yard dash in his two attempts at the combine, and while Conley might not be that fast, he could potentially get under a 4.4.The secondary class for this year’s NFL Draft is especially deep, and could cause Conley to slip slightly. After being projected as a potential first-rounder early this season, he has since slipped down draft boards, and could find himself picked in the second round.Regardless, Conley said he is going to continue to fight.“I think about it, but I use it as motivation,” he said.Conley will be hearing his name called early in the draft, but will likely see multiple cornerbacks — including Lattimore — selected before him. And as always, Conley will stand by his fellow Buckeyes, and accept what is placed before him, which might be a product of his time in Columbus.“All the experiences on and off the field at Ohio State have made me a better man.”
Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez refused to give any guarantees that he will remain in charge until the end of the season. The Magpies have endured a difficult second campaign back in the Premier League following a lack of new signings over the summer transfer window.Currently, Newcastle find themselves just two points above the relegation zone and suffered early exits in both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.Adding to their woes is the failed attempts to recruit new talent in this month’s transfer window after loan deals for Atletico Madrid’s Gelson Martins and Lazio’s Jordan Lukaku fell through. This has left many wondering what will come of Benitez’s own future at St James’ Park with the Spaniard out of contract at the end of the season and having previously expressed his frustrations over the club’s transfer policy.Speaking ahead to tonight’s home game against Premier League champions Manchester City, Benitez admitted he isn’t sure there will any new signings arriving before Thursday’s deadline.“I am not in charge of the deals,” said Benitez, according to Daily Mirror.Liverpool legend Nicol slams Harry Maguire’s Man United form Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Steve Nicol believes Harry Maguire has made some “horrendous mistakes” recently, and has failed to find his best form since joining Manchester United. The former Liverpool boss could leave Newcastle without having to pay any compensation and hinted last week that this month’s transfer activity could have a key impact on whether or not to sign a renewal.“No, I cannot guarantee anything,” replied Benitez, when asked if he could leave before the end of the season.“I guarantee I will be focussed and try to do my best every minute.”As for leaving on Thursday, he added: “We will wait until Thursday and see what happens.“Hopefully we can get three points against Manchester City and then everybody will be happy.”Newcastle ended a five-match winless run in the Premier League last time out by grabbing a crucial 3-0 win over relegation rivals Cardiff City.Benitez will be hoping that his side can take some badly needed momentum from that victory ahead of tonight’s encounter with City that will begin at 21:00 (CET).
Governor Bill Walker signed the statewide smoke-free workplace bill into law today at the Lucky Wishbone, reportedly the first restaurant in Alaska to go completely smoke-free. Businesses affected by the ban are required to put up signs that reads “Smoking Prohibited by Law–Fine $50.” Businesses that fail to post these signs will be liable for a fine between $50 and $300. Facebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享Starting on October 1, a new law goes into effect in the State of Alaska, the smoke-free workplace bill was signed into law today. If a community decides it wants to allow smoking in those environments, they can choose to “opt out” by putting the question on the ballot for the residents of the area to vote on. Smoking in pretty much any workplace whether it’s a public-facing business like restaurants, bars and music venues or more closed to the public like an office or hotel room is also banned. Senate Bill 63, commonly called the “Take it Outside Act,” was sponsored by Senator Peter Micciche (R-K-Pen), to protect Alaskans working indoors from secondhand smoke. The law includes marijuana and electronic cigarettes. The new law will also ban smoking outdoors at open-air venues like the seating area of outdoor concerts and sporting events, as well as near entrances to buildings affected by the ban and near playgrounds when children are present. Smoking on public transportation or in shared work vehicles would also be banned.
While Alaskans have brutally criticized Governor Bill Walker’s move to “steal” the PFD, this check is close to an average (or ‘median’) value to what Alaskans have received in previous years. The state will pay 523,012 dividends by direct deposit and 70,452 by check, according to figures finalized on September 22. The first dividend distribution of $1,000 in 1982 went to 469,741 Alaskans, a total of $469,741,000. Last year, 530,067 dividends were paid by direct deposit and 78,281 paid by check. As the state faces a budget deficit attempts to restructure the permanent fund dividend (PFD) program to fund the government continue. This is the third year in a row, the state isn’t following the traditional distribution formula. Facebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享This year’s $1,600 dividend is being direct deposited and checks are being sent out on Thursday, October 4.
The Audiophiliac Tags Speakers Home Entertainment The Klipsch Reference Premiere 5000F speakers Klipsch The Klipsch Reference Premiere 600M bookshelf speaker was my Speaker of the Year for 2018. I’m still coming to terms with how remarkable that speaker is, but the question was raised, why not try a Klipsch tower speaker? As I scanned the offerings I was drawn to its Reference Premiere 5000F. Priced at $750 a pair it’s not all that much more expensive than the $550-a-pair RP 600M, but by adding another woofer and a larger cabinet, those are differences you can literally feel with the RP-5000F. This bad boy can shake a room and your booty! The RP-5000F’s front baffle is decked out with a 1-inch titanium tweeter and a pair of 5.25-inch spun copper Cerametallic woofers. The tweeter is mounted in a Tractrix horn, which is a specialty of Klipsch. The horn focuses the acoustic power of the tweeter so it can be tapped much more efficiently, and the tweeter’s output is greatly increased. The speaker is remarkably sensitive, 96 dB @2.83 volts/meter), that’s a lot higher than average. The high sensitivity allows the RP-5000F to use less power to play at a given volume level than most speakers. So it will sound great with low power amplifiers and still sing with high power amps. Impedance is rated at 8 ohms (compatible). The RP-5000F is a ported design, but instead of the usual round port, there’s a rear baffle mounted Tractrix port shaped like the tweeter’s horn. Below that, I liked that the bi-wire speaker cable connectors felt sturdy. The bottom of the cabinet features outrigger feet to enhance stability and decrease the chances it will accidentally tip over. The RP-5000F’s stout medium-density fiberboard cabinet measures 36.1 x 8.2 x 14.4 inches, and it weighs a manageable 37 pounds. Finish options run to Ebony, Walnut (both are vinyl), and piano black. My review samples faux walnut finish which was attractive. Cloth grilles are provided, but I never took them out of the box, I think those copper drivers look cool. A closer look at the Klipsch Reference Premiere 5000F horn tweeter Klipsch I teamed the RP-5000F speakers with a NAD C 316BEE and Cambridge Audio AXA35 integrated amps with an Oppo BDP 205 Blu-ray player for almost all of my listening sessions. The liveliness is the first thing you notice about the sound, the RP-5000F lets music cut loose, and that sort of vividness is addicting. While it’s just a skinny, 36-inch tall speaker I’d still classify it as a small tower. Klipsch makes a bunch of larger models, but the RP-5000F might be the sweet spot for buyers who need some potency to the music and/or home theater. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers The Live Anthology set was a joy to listen to. The RP-5000F is the sort of speaker that encourages loud volume sessions, mostly because it never sounded strained when Tom and the boys rocked their hearts out. The softer acoustic tunes fared just as well, in either case, the RP-5000F was always coasting. An RP 600M couldn’t match the RP-5000F’s bass power and dynamic slam, not by a long shot. Jazz alto saxophonist’s Lee Konitz’ Billie Holiday tribute album, Strings for Holiday, sounded lovely. Konitz’s breathy and soulful sax was accompanied by a small string chamber ensemble. Stereo imaging was big and spacious.Compared with the JBL Stage A170 tower speaker I reviewed in late June the RP-5000F’s sounded more immediate and clearer. The A170 countered with a richer tonal balance, the RP-5000F’s midrange was more neutral, more accurate, and the treble had more sparkle and brilliance. The A170 was more laid back, it sounded hazier than the RP-5000F.The spikey rhythms punctuating The National’s I Am Easy To Find album had more transient energy over the RP-5000F, but the A170s warmer sound might be preferred by some listeners. One thing’s for sure, Matt Berninger’s baritone vocals were easier to follow over the RP-5000Fs. Overall, I preferred the RP-5000Fs for their superior transparency, but there’s something to be said for the A170s sweeter presentation. The Klipsch Reference Premiere 5000F makes a strong case for speaker buyers trying to decide between bookshelf and tower speakers. Small speakers can be good, but great towers like the RP-5000F handily trump the smaller ones in terms of power, deep bass, and dynamics. Listen to a pair and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Kangana Ranaut loses cool when asked about rape charges on Aditya PancholiInstagram video screenshotKangana Ranaut recently lost her cool when one reporter asked her about accusations of rape against Aditya Pancholi. The actress slammed the reporter by saying that, “you can be behind the bars”.The Manikarnika actress told the reporter that one cannot name the complainant in such cases. “Media should be responsible. These issues should not be sensationalised. And you cannot take the name of the applicant, you will be behind bars if you do so,” an angry Kangana told the reporter when she asked her to comment on filling rape case against Pancholi. While it was believed that Kangana has filed a rape case against Pancholi, the actress’ sister Rangoli Chandel on Twitter stated that she filed the case and not Kangana. Rangoli in her tweets said that she filed the case against Pancholi as the latter has been filing multiple cases against Kangana.”Kangana has openly spoken about her struggles, she feels that’s more important, in her own words she always says, I am not fighting these men I am fighting male chauvinism, I HAVE FILED A CASE ON PANCHOLI, she hasn’t… kitni bar samjhaoon? Pancholi and his wife attacking her everyday and filing many cases what am I supposed to do? People should condemn them but no one saying anything to full time criminal family, when Kangana never filed any case why should media take her name?” she said in her tweet. It is to be mentioned, Kangana, who was in a relationship with Pancholi years ago, had earlier filed a case against him, accusing him of physical and sexual assault. In response to that, Pancholi had filed a defamation case against the actress. Hence, it is little perplexing when Rangoli says that she filed the fresh rape case against Pancholi and not Kangana.Watch the video of Kangana losing cool on the journalist:
By George Kevin Jordan, AFRO Staff WriterThe D.C. Council pushed forward the Breast Density Screening and Notification Act of 2018, which would require that women be informed if they have dense breast tissue, an independent risk factor for breast cancer, officials said. This legislation also requires insurance coverage for necessary additional screenings for women with dense breast tissue. The Brem Foundation, along with Goldblatt Martin Pozen, worked with the Council to shape and ultimately pass the legislation. The Brem Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to maximizing women’s chances of finding more curable breast cancer through expert education about early detection, access to diagnostic tests and physician training. The D.C. Council pushed forward the Breast Density Screening and Notification Act of 2018, which would require women to be informed if they have dense breast tissue, an independent risk factor for breast cancer, and insurance coverage for necessary screenings for women with dense breast tissue. (Courtesy Photo)“In the District, 28.5 women of 100,000 die of breast cancer every year,” said Council member Vincent Gray, who also serves as Health Committee chairman. “Women with dense tissue need extra screening to catch earlier, more curable breast cancers, but they cannot get the screening they need if they are not aware that they have dense tissue in the first place. That is why I introduced the Breast Density and Screening Notification Act of 2018 which requires health care facilities to include information about breast density in federally required mammography reports. I am proud of this bill as it will empower our residents to take control of their health care and undoubtedly save lives.”The District joins 37 other states in passing breast density notification laws. This law will also be critical for women with lower incomes to have access to additional screenings. This is pivotal because D.C. tops the nation in breast cancer related deaths according to data by the American Cancer Society.Currently, over 40 percent of women in the U.S. have dense breast tissue. This means they have a higher ratio of connective tissue to fatty tissue in their breasts. Dense tissue is not only a risk factor for breast cancer, but having it makes breast cancer harder to find on a mammogram. Women with dense breast tissue need additional screenings, such as ultrasounds.“Breast density is a real and strong risk factor for developing breast cancer. This legislation will empower women, save lives, and bring the D.C. community one step closer to a day when D.C. no longer claims the highest death rate from breast cancer. Thank you to all of the heroic survivors, doctors, legislators, advocates, and champions who made this possible,” said Andrea Wolf, executive director of the Brem Foundation.Anne Kalosh, a D.C. resident, spoke to the AFRO about her personal relationship with the disease and dense breast tissue, saying, “what this legislation is about saved my life. And probably will save the life of a lot of other people.”Kalosh said that growing up everyone she knew who had breast cancer died, including her mother, and two of her aunts. “I was always very aware of breast cancer and was always afraid of breast cancer.”Because of her family history, Kalosh said she had always gotten screenings since her 20s. Doctor’s identified that she had dense breast tissue and suggested she get ultrasound along with her mammograms. Kalosh explained that abnormalities on a mammogram look white and so does dense breast tissue, which can make it difficult to see if something is wrong. “That’s why an ultrasound can help for women like me,” Kalosh said.“I’m extremely lucky,” Kalosh said. Just last year she found cancer in her breast from an ultrasound, not from a mammogram. Luckily doctors at GW Cancer Center found it early enough and her prognosis is good after treatment. Here are a few facts about dense tissue and breast cancer:Women with very dense breasts are 4.7 times more likely to develop breast cancerUltrasound finds 24 percent more cancers in women with dense breast tissueSensitivity of mammography is 85 percent in all women but only 47.8 percent-64.4 percent in women with dense breast tissue1 in 8 American women will get breast cancer during her lifetimeOver 95 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer in early stages will survive and thriveThe survival rate drops to about 22 percent when breast cancer is detected at Stage 4.In 2019, over 331,430 Americans are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer, and 41,760 women will likely die from the disease. For more information about the Brem Foundation please go to http://www.bremfoundation.org/
